Can I Have an Allergic Reaction to my Butt Plug?

Yes, it is possible to have an allergic reaction to your butt plug depending on what material it is made of and how clean you keep it. Butt plugs are made from a variety of materials including silicone, glass, steel, vinyl, latex, and many others. The reaction of these materials when inside the human body varies from one person to another. While a given material may be allergic to you it may have no effect on another individual. Poor hygiene with regard to your toys may also be a factor in allergic reactions. Toys made of porous materials may require extra care when cleaning to ensure no bacteria remains embedded in the pores which might cause infections or irritation.

What Can Cause An Allergic Reaction

Allergic reactions when using butt plugs can be attributed to three factors – the material used to make the plug, the fabric used on tail plugs and the lubricant used on the plug.

Butt plugs are made from different materials which may react differently to your body. The common materials include latex, glass, silicone, steel, and vinyl. Some toys are also made from Jelly.

Jelly toys are known to contain compounds called phthalates (used to make the plastic soft) which may leak and cause irritation to some people. If you use any of these toys and experience a burning sensation it is advisable to discontinue their use immediately. A majority of toys from reputable companies are phthalate free. You should check on the label when you buy a new toy and ensure it is Phthalate-free. Other individuals may be allergic to butt plugs made from latex. This could be natural latex or the synthetic version such as polyisoprene. Toys made from latex will normally have an unpleasant chemical smell.

The point is for you to choose a reputable manufacturer of sex toys with a history of producing high-quality products that are made from unadulterated material. We recommend solid non-porous materials such as silicone, glass or metal. Silicone is a bit expensive but it will last longer without breaking down if you take good care of it. When using silicone toys you should never use silicone lube because it may cause the toy to break down.

Silicone toys may be preferable to most people because they are non-porous which makes them easier to clean and are unlikely to harbor bacteria. They have a soft texture and are hypo-allergenic which makes them ideal for most allergy sufferers.

What Is In A Plug

Most butt plugs are made of a single uniform material. Manufacturers use different materials or a combination of materials to make these plugs. If you are allergic to a particular material then it is advisable to avoid toys made from that material. For a lot of people, the most troublesome material that causes allergic reactions is latex. If you know that you are allergic to latex then avoid any plug made of this material or a combination of latex and other materials. You may also want to be cautious about using condoms since they are also made of latex.

Many other materials used to make butt plugs are considered safe. In case you experience any reaction to other materials, it advisable to discontinue use and contact the manufacturer. You should take a closer look at the labels to establish whether the toy is made up of a combination of materials. This is often the case with some silicone plugs which may not be 100% silicone.

What’s in a tail

Butt plug tails are made of real fur or faux fur. The commonly used material for tails is the faux fur which is made from synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon or acrylic. It is advisable to find out what material your tail is made of and stay alert for any reactions to them.

To stay safe you need to know which animal furs you are allergic to and avoid those. For example, if you are allergic to cats, do not purchase cat fur. Knowing what is safe for you will help you avoid a trip to the hospital in case your allergy gets serious.

What’s in my lube?

Another area you need to be careful about is lubrication.  Lubricants contain a variety of ingredients that may have different effects on you. The best way to avoid adverse reactions is to first test the lubricant before you apply it on your butt plug. But before you move to the test it is critical that you look at the label to find out if the lubricant contains any ingredients you are already allergic to. Some flavored lubricants contain extra ingredients that you may want to look out for in case they react adversely to your body.

The test is done the same way you test hair dye or moisturizer. Simply apply a small amount of the lubricant on a hidden part of your skin such as the inner arm and leave it for some time (maybe half an hour) and look out for any reaction. If no negative reaction is observed, the lubricant should be safe to use.

So, is it actually safe?

The butt plug you buy is most likely safe. The reason we say most likely is that you are the only person familiar with what you are allergic to. We cannot give a guarantee that the butt plugs you purchase will not affect you negatively. In case you have doubts about a particular product, it is advisable to contact the manufacturer for guidance. The basic approach here is to be aware of which materials you are allergic to and avoid them at all costs. In the event that you have used a butt plug or lubricant and you observe an adverse reaction such as pain or a burning sensation, it is advisable to discontinue use and clean affected areas with water. If the burning or pain persists then you need to consult a doctor immediately.
